Dentistry for Adults
A Healthy Smile, A Healthy Body
We operate on the philosophy that healthy teeth and gums are vital for your body’s general health. Did you know that most lost teeth are not caused by decay? Gum disease is the primary culprit, and recent studies have linked periodontal disease to serious health conditions like stroke and heart disease and even diabetes. The good news is that gum disease can be treated successfully, often without surgery. We want all of our patients to have outstanding oral health and are committed to paying meticulous attention to all of your needs.
Why Are Hygiene Visits So Important?
Regular cleaning by a professional hygienist is the most vital reason to visit the dentist. You know that over time, plaque and tartar build on teeth. Brushing can usually remove the soft and sticky plaque, but even missing a little bit leaves it to harden into tartar. Your basic toothbrush and floss can’t do much about that. Tartar accumulates not just on the tooth surface but below the gumline, as well. This can lead to more serious problems with your gums and teeth later on. Because of the research showing a definite link between untreated gum disease and other serious conditions, having your teeth regularly, professionally cleaned is one of the best things you can do to stay healthy!
Are You a Migraine Sufferer?
A staggering number of Americans – over 40 million – suffer from migraines. Are you one of them? Even more report dealing with tension headaches. East Berlin Smiles began offering what many of Dr. Cockley’s patients call a “miracle cure” for their headaches. This “miracle” is the NTI™ device, which has been FDA-approved not just to reduce migraine pain, but to actually prevent it. NTI is a dental device that’s small and simple. It works by relaxing the muscles in the head, which in turn reduces stimulation to the nerves that cause migraines. In clinical trials, over 80 percent of the people who suffer from migraines reported a 77 percent reduction in migraine events. That’s better than any drug approved for migraine prevention! The device is easily fit at our office. There’s no surgery involved, and it has no side effect risk, especially compared to pharmaceutical migraine treatments. If you or someone you know suffers from migraines or tension headaches, be sure to ask us about this exciting treatment.
Oral health can have a far bigger impact on a person’s life than regular cleanings and the occasional filling can address. Many patients who’ve dealt with injury, illness, bite problems, and simple wear and tear can have chronic problems that they don’t even realize began in the mouth. Bruxism (tooth grinding), TMJ, periodontitis, crooked or misshapen teeth, and missing teeth can combine to cause headaches and migraines, toothaches, chronic bad breath, and an unattractive appearance. But you don’t have to live like that.
Dr. Cockley will sit down with you to discuss your concerns, symptoms, and goals. After taking digital X-rays, photos, and imprints of your mouth, she will present options for a treatment plan to address your issues and achieve a healthy, pain-free, beautiful smile. We can also discuss phased treatment and financial planning that will put your dream smile within reach.
Be Completely Relaxed During Treatment
How would you like to be completely relaxed throughout your treatment and leave feeling rejuvenated and energetic? We are happy to offer our patients the option of the NuCalm™ system. NuCalm is a totally natural neuroscience technology that allows a state of relaxation with absolutely no use of narcotics or controlled substances. The patented four-step program relaxes the patient completely all the way through their treatment. There are no side effects and no reported adverse reactions in the thousands of patients who have chosen this treatment option. Ask us if NuCalm is right for you.
Air Abrasion for Pain-Free Restorations
One of the reasons people don’t like the dentist is the sound of the drill or the worry that they’ll need anesthesia. We can eliminate both with the use of air abrasion, a fantastic technology that, instead of drilling tooth enamel, aims a stream of tiny particles and air at the area of decay and gently mists it away! Many times, little or no anesthesia is required. The sound and vibrations of the drill are gone for many procedures – and so is most of the pain!
Fillings Without Metal or Mercury
For decades, the standard for filling material has been the silver-mercury amalgam. They do a reasonable job restoring decayed teeth, but they also provide certain shortcomings. Metal doesn’t bond to teeth well, which can allow decay to leak into the tooth over time. Many patients, however, choose the white bonded fillings because of the way they look. They blend with your natural tooth, so they simply look better than a metal filling. We offer modern restorations that are a natural-looking white, contain no metals, and can actually strengthen your teeth. A tight bond with the healthy part of the tooth means a reduced chance of decay in the future.
Special Attention for Our Seniors
We know that as we get older, our bodies change. So do our teeth and gums. The accumulation of plaque for years, plus staining from tobacco, tea, and coffee, can make teeth look darker. We have procedures that can address these results. The medications many older people take can reduce the flow of saliva, which can be detrimental to oral health. Simple products can help with this condition. Fillings age, too, and that can make them weak or cause cracks. Regular check-ups will allow us to stay on top of your existing fillings. Root decay and gum disease are often major concerns in the senior population. Daily cleaning and good nutrition are critical for healthy gums. If your gums become red or begin to bleed or your teeth start to feel loose, contact us immediately.
Xylitol – Another Easy Way to Combat Cavities
Xylitol is a natural substance found in vegetables, mushrooms, berries, and other fruit. It’s even produced in our bodies, about 5 to 10 grams every day. And it’s been determined through 25+ years of clinical testing to be the best sweetener for teeth. It seems to be particularly effective at combating tooth decay caused by eating foods high in sugars and starches. Dental associations in Finland, Norway, Sweden, England, Ireland, Estonia, and the Netherlands have endorsed xylitol.
You can take xylitol in the form of tablets, chewing gum, mouthwash, toothpaste, or even candy. Allergy sufferers also find relief with xylitol, which also comes in a nasal spray. East Berlin Smiles offers and encourages our patients to use xylitol products. The results have been amazing. If you want fewer cavities and better upper respiratory health, ask us about xylitol!
